Most of children books I’ve read that discuss about heavy topic such as bullying are usually somehow preachy. Unlike them, The Boy in The Orange Cape takes different approach. The story focuses on how a young boy named Cody who in spite of getting picked on by a bully, keeps on wearing an orange cape to school for a noble personal cause. The event takes its spin as one of a boy at school notices what’s been going on to Cody and the bully. Can everyone work together to stop the bully?
I like how this book can be a start for a bigger and much deeper discussion with my four year old. The message is easily understood and relatable-close to what a youngster might see in his environment. The illustrations are a bit whimsical and soft-a style that I adore. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who want to start talking about bullying and other issues related to it such as confidence, trust, and persistence. The fact that it was written by a mental health counselor is a plus. 10 out of 10.
